This 205 GTi was ordered new by Bernard Arnault, supposed 4th richest person in the world. He had it armored so he could cruise along anonymously. Weight went up from 850 or so kg to 1400 kg... It’s immaculate and the asking price is €37,500.
€37500 is about $44800 in USD.
To be fair, a non-armored 205 GTi in this pristine condition would probably still be worth half that asking price or more.

Level 2 isn’t bulletproof for most guns but it’s in europe so I guess there’s not a real security issue regarding shutguns or large calibers.
I am still amazed the weight went up so much, nowadays if you were to armor a Mini cooper you’d be adding less than 150kg because of the technological advancements.

This work was done in 1990, which might explain it? No idea. They also added AC, which should weighs something as well.

Half the point of these cars is the low weight though, adding that much weight kills the driving characteristics.

I mean, i’d be hard pressed to see a large SUV being weighed down by 400kg with light armoring. but back in the 90´s... Probably
Tech hasn’t advanced much in terms of glass, but in terms of opaque bulletproofing it has a lot, this car probably has ballistic steels rather than kevlar fibres or another type of fibre.

I guess so. Steel, not kevlar. From the article:
The car’s structure received thick sheet metal panels and windows, the suspension and brakes were also reinforced.
Here it is with the hatch open. They just added another layer of (probably reinforced) glass.

Normally armored glass is a polycarbonate/glass sandwich, the most common is 21mm
